What is ASO (Antisreptolysin O)?
ASO, which is the abbreviation of antistreptolysin O, is the antibody produced by the immune system to fight the toxic enzyme called streptolysin produced by group A streptococcus bacteria that enter the body. While some people do not experience any symptoms as a result of strep infection, in advanced cases and if left untreated, these infections may cause some symptoms.
The ASO test is a blood test to measure the amount of Antistreptolysin O produced as an antibody in the blood. ASO antibodies begin to rise within 1-2 weeks of strep infections in the body.
This increase also causes the amount of ASO in the blood to increase. With some symptoms experienced after streptococcal infection, your doctor requests an ASO test. Common complications of strep infection include bacterial endocarditis, glomerulonephritis, and rheumatic fever.
What is ASO Height?
An elevated ASO means that the person has recently had a strep infection and therefore the measured Antistreptolysin O result is higher than values considered normal. The ASO value in the blood begins to increase within 1-2 weeks after the streptococcal virus enters the body and reaches its highest level in the following periods.
However, not every high ASO level indicates that you have a strep infection. Likewise, a negative ASO value in the blood does not indicate that there is no virus in the person's body. In such cases, your doctor may request extra tests. There may be no increase in the antistreptolysin O value with antibiotic treatment applied at the beginning of the process of high ASO in the blood due to infection.
Is ASO Positive Dangerous?
A positive ASO value in the blood indicates that the body has been infected with a streptococcal infection and antibodies have been produced due to a recent infection.
What are the symptoms of Aso Height?
The most common symptoms of high ASO are fatigue, decreased appetite, sore throat and nausea and vomiting. Elevated ASO, which is a condition where the ASO value in the blood is high in adults, may not always show symptoms related to infection, but in cases where high ASO occurs due to infection, the following symptoms are observed:
Sore throat
Weakness
Nausea and vomiting
Stomache ache
Pain and swelling in the joints
High fever
Red-like rashes on the skin
Headache
Swelling in lymph nodes
What is ASO low?
A low ASO value as a result of the laboratory test indicates that the person does not have hemolytic streptococcus bacteria. Usually ASO is described as negative.
