Depending on whether the thyroid gland secretes too much or too little hormone, other organs work faster or slower. In case of low secretion of thyroid hormones, that is, hypothyroidism, the entire metabolism from the intestine to the hair shaft slows down, resulting in complaints such as hair loss, forgetfulness, tendency to sleep, weight gain, weakness, and deepening of the voice. So what are the thyroid symptoms?
Although thyroid is often known as the name of a disease, it is actually an organ located in front of the trachea, under the area known as the Adam's apple in the throat. In case of excess of this hormone, that is, hyperthyroidism, excessive sweating, hair loss and rapid weight loss occur. The command hormone that directs the functioning of the thyroid gland comes from the pituitary gland in the brain. TSH hormone (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), secreted from the pituitary gland, comes to the thyroid gland through the blood and ensures the secretion of T3 and T4 hormones from the thyroid gland.
These hormones are of great importance in the functioning of the immune system as well as regulating metabolism; It affects processes such as heart rate and body temperature and converts nutrients into energy.
It ensures brain and intelligence development in the fetus and newborn baby in the womb. It directs the child's growth and development. It regulates sugar, fat and protein metabolism in adults.
Because of these important functions in the body, thyroid disorders cause significant health problems and must be treated. Treatment of insidiously progressive thyroid gland problems varies depending on the type of disease. Replacing or regulating hormones with drug treatment, radioactive iodine treatment for risk factors and surgery to remove this gland can be applied in cases where drug treatment is not sufficient.
WHAT IS THYROID?
The thyroid, which resembles the letter U or H and has a shape resembling a butterfly, is responsible for the production of hormones that regulate many functions in the body. The thyroid, which provides the production, storage and release of calcitonin hormone as well as T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones, is approximately one It is the size of a walnut and its total weight is 15 to 20 grams. The middle part of the thyroid, which is four cm long and one to two cm wide, and consists of the right and left lobes, is defined as the isthmus in medical language. The hormones secreted from the thyroid gland mix with the blood circulation and stimulate the relevant system or organ. Regular thyroid gland functions, which are very important for body health, affect almost all metabolic processes in the body. In other words, the thyroid gland, which controls the release of hormones that have an effect on many activities in the body, is one of the endocrine glands in the body. The functions of the thyroid gland, such as hormone production, storage and release, are controlled by the pituitary gland, as the TRH hormone secreted by the hypothalamus region in the brain stimulates the pituitary gland, another endocrine gland located in the brain.
WHAT ARE THE THYROID SYMPTOMS?
Thyroid, one of the endocrine glands, is the organ responsible for the production and release of hormones called T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) into the bloodstream. If the thyroid gland, which controls and carries out all processes related to metabolism, cannot fulfill these functions, many different health problems and related symptoms occur. This condition, also defined as thyroid symptoms, can be caused by many different diseases depending on whether the thyroid gland is under or overactive. Thyroid symptoms can be listed as follows:
-Fatigue and weakness,
-Gaining or losing weight without a significant change in diet,
-Sleep problems such as constant desire to sleep, not being able to wake up refreshed, feeling exhausted during the day, and not being able to fall asleep,
-Psychological and mental changes such as depressive mood, lack of concentration, weakening of memory, blurred consciousness, anxiety, panic attacks,
-Muscle or joint problems such as sudden numbness or tingling sensation in the arms and legs, muscle and joint pain, muscle weakness,
-Menstrual problems such as increased pain and severity during menstrual period, menstrual bleeding lasting longer or shorter than normal, irregularity of the menstrual cycle,
-Problems such as decreased libido, sexual reluctance and infertility,
-Intestinal problems such as long-lasting constipation, diarrhea and slow bowel movements,
-Low or high cholesterol levels despite all diet practices, exercise and medication use,
-Blood pressure changes such as hypertension, systolic blood pressure being high even though diastolic blood pressure is normal or low,
-Pulse problems such as heart rate beating 10 to 20 times less than normal,
-In addition to hair problems such as hair loss, hair appearing dry and lifeless, thinning of eyelashes and eyebrows, drying of the skin, nails starting to break easily,
-Problems related to body temperature such as low body temperature, feeling cold in hands and feet, feeling hot, excessive sweating.
